Should I Just Plead Guilty in NC?

It’s not that uncommon for me to be asked, even on a daily basis, “Bill, I was driving and I was drinking and got pulled over. Shouldn’t I just plead guilty?” The answer is: it depends. I know that sounds kind of odd, but generally speaking we don't go in with a perspective of pleading guilty. We go into with a perspective that you are presumed innocent until proven guilty. The difference between being found guilty and pleading guilty is pretty substantial. I tell people, “Don't assume that just because what happened on the scene shows that you may be impaired necessary comes out in court.”
