Bill Powers is an experienced attorney whom defends North Carolina  driving while impaired DWI cases. A partner at The Law Offices of Powers McCartan, pllc he was recently honored with the “2011 Lawyer of the Year DWI/DUI” Charlotte, North Carolina Award  by Best Lawyers in America (U.S. News & World Report Best Lawyers & Best Law Firms).

Mr. Powers graduated with honors from North Carolina University in 1988 with a B.A. in Political Science. He earned his Juris Doctor (JD) from Campbell University School of Law in 1992, where he was awarded the Book Award-American Jurisprudence while on an Academic Scholarship. Mr. Powers was admitted to the North Carolina Bar in 1992.

Mr. Powers served as an Assistant Public Defender at the Mecklenburg County Public Defender’s Office from 1992 until 1994.

In 2011 Mr. Powers was chair for the North Carolina Advocaces for Justice Annual DWI Conferences in Greensboro & Wilmington, North Carolina as well as Program Chair for the Masters of Advocacy during the NCAJ Summer Converence 2011 in Wilmington, North Carolina.

Achieving certification in a specialized field is noteworthy for any lawyer. Mr. Powers received his certification as a Board Certified Criminal Law Specialist from the National Board of Legal Specialty Certification formally known as the National Board of Trial Advocacy.

Mr. Powers has taught, hosted, or chaired numerous CLE seminars for his peers throughout North Carolina. He has also taught Trial Preparation and DWI Defenses to law enforcement personnel at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Academy.

Mr. Powers is regularly invited to share his opinion on legal trends by the media. His comments have appeared in North Carolina Lawyers Weekly and local newspapers as well as on radio and television stations. In 2011, he served as a “legal correspondent” for the Tara Servatius Show on WBT Radio for the first degree murder trial of Demetrius Montgomery in Charlotte.

Mr. Powers is a member of the North Carolina State Bar, North Carolina Advocates for Justice, Mr. Powers believes in giving back to the community. For this reason, he continues to lecture in public and produce Continuing Education videos and seminars for families, school, and churches on alcohol and drug abuse and the risks associated with impaired driving.
